José Luis Leyvahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10693930788347932879noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15798457.post-6432121592264570442009-12-27T06:57:00.000-08:002009-12-27T07:03:43.718-08:00The Columbia Years"With the Wall Street boom, Manhattan was humming, new developments cropping up everywhere; men and women barely out of their twenties already enjoying ridiculous wealth, the fashion merchants fast on their heels. The beauty, the filth, the noise, and the excess, all of it dazzled my senses; there seemed no constraints on originality of lifestyles or the manufacture of desire -a more expensive restaurant, a finer suit of clothes, a more exclusive nightspot, a more beautiful woman, a more potent high. Uncertain of my ability to steer a course of moderation, fearful of falling into old habits, I took on the temperament if not the convictions of a street corner preacher, prepared to see temptation everywhere, ready to overrun a fragile will."
Barack Obama, Dream from My FatherJosé Luis Leyvahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10693930788347932879noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15798457.post-21934863801973751922009-12-16T10:05:00.000-08:002009-12-16T10:11:40.144-08:00En la nocheVi "The Lost Weekend" dos veces.

It shrinks my liver, doesn't it, Nat?

No hacia frio.

Inside the building: The Bronx from Jose Leyva on Vimeo.
José Luis Leyvahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10693930788347932879noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15798457.post-45660864459679178982009-10-18T11:35:00.000-07:002009-10-18T11:38:58.726-07:00Random readingsFrom The Best American Nonrequired Reading 2007:

Best American Names of Television Programs Taken to Their Logical Conclusions:

1. 24
2. 7
3. 365

“The only statement I want to make is that I am an innocent man convicted of a crime I did not commit. I have been persecuted for twelve years for something I did not do. From God’s dust I came and to dust I will return, so the Earth shall become my throne.”

Tienen que oir esta pieza Witness to an Execution. Es difícil describirla. Puro audio.

Extractos:

He'll walk up to the cell where we are and he'll say 'It's time.' And so they will unlock the cell and he's not handcuffed or chained. He's just sitting there. And he and I will walk into the chamber.

Some of them are very calm. Some of them are upset. Some of them are crying.
Some of them have been sweating. Some of them will have the smell of anxiety, if you will. Of fear.

Usually within about twenty seconds he's completely strapped down. Twenty to thirty seconds. I mean, it's down to a fine art.

A lot of inmates apologize. A lot of inmates will say that you're executing an innocent man. And then there have been some men who have been executed that I knew, and I've had them tell me goodbye.

I've walked out of death chamber numb and my legs feeling like rubber sometimes, my head maybe not really feeling like it's attached to my shoulders. I've been told that it's perfectly normal, everyone feels it, and that after a while that numb feeling goes away. And indeed it does.
