La sabiduría del Señor Greenwood

En una entrevista con The New Yorker, el genio de laS guitarras, los sintetizadores y las cajas de ritmos de Radiohead, Jonny Greenwood, se dice frustrado por la decisión (de Thom Yorke) de no grabar más en fortmato de CD. Los paréntesis son míos.

Las razones: la calidad del MP3 es menor a la de fomato que usaba la banda para grabar en compactos. Además, Jonny dice que lo malo de los MP3 es que permiten almacenar demasiada música. El formato es prácticamente infinito. Al contratio, un CD “se acaba” y ocupa espacio. El riesgo de la abundancia que implica tener música en MP3 es que la gente no se tomará el tiempo en escuchar canciones y discos con la atención suficiente. Casi poético su razonamiento.

At home, I prefer CD or vinyl, partly because they sound a little better in a quiet room and partly because they’re finite in length and separate things, unlike the endless days and days of music stored on my laptop.

The downside is that people are encouraged to own far more music than they can ever give their full attention to. People will have MP3s of every Miles Davis’ record but never think of hearing any of them twice in a row—there’s just too much to get through. You’re thinking, “I’ve got ‘Sketches of Spain and ‘Bitches Brew’—let’s zip through those while I’m finishing that e-mail.” That abundance can push any music into background music, furniture music.
